Ink Cartridge Prices... Why So High?

Techstination feature for Monday, May 24, 2010

Ink cartridge prices. Why so high? I'm Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear. Ounce for ounce....the price of ink for that printer on your desk sounds ridiculously high. You can try refill kits and the like, but the results can be pretty dicey. Now the largest printer maker out there, HP, has begun a campaign to explain why those ink cartridges cost so much. Ink and media specialist Thom Brown...

"There's a lot of technology that's involved in creating this cartridge. And it's more about how do you design something and manufacture something that is reliable and consistent. Once you explain that to people, they start understanding that they're buying more than just a liquid. They're buying a really precise technical device here."

There are ways to save money...using multiple packs or buying large capacity cartridges. If cartridges are expensive....the printers they work in are relatively cheap. That razor-razorblade business model is still the norm in the industry. You can find us with archives, interviews and more at BootCamp.com. I'm Fred Fishkin.
