Men, Women and Computers

Techstination feature for Friday, January 22, 1999

When it comes to using computers, there are differences between men and women. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bootcamp, a report on computers and technology. When it comes to using PCs, a new survey conducted by Hewlett Packard and Working Woman magazine finds equality among the sexes. Three quarters of men and women are now comfortable with the technology. That may come as surprise to some. Working Woman editor in chief Bernadette Grey...

"Few women really classify themselves as being illiterate or fearful anymore. It was really just 15 percent. An equal number, 15 percent, say they're wizards. And the rest say I'm computer literate."

Grey says the survey found women more anxious than men to improve technology in the workplace and they are also more inclined than men to introduce children to computers at an earlier age. One of the other big differences shows up when it comes to asking for help with computer problems...

"Men are a lot less likely to turn to family, friends and colleagues for help when something goes wrong with technology. Ten percent of men versus twenty two percent of women. Men are much more likely to try to figure the problem themselves."

And finally the survey inquired...

"If you were stranded on a desert island and we gave them a list of what you would like to have with you...most people picked a computer as number one."

Working Woman editor in chief Bernadette Grey. For the record the list did not include a member of the opposite sex.
