The migration to solid state drives. I'm Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear. With the low prices and tremendous storage space of traditional hard drives, solid state drives or SSDs have not generated a whole lot of consumer interest. Like the memory in smartphones, digital cameras and music players, SSDs have no moving parts, can transfer data quickly and are much sturdier than hard drives that have spinning platters. On the down side, their capacities have been lower and their prices considerably higher. But more and more companies are looking to bring SSDs into the consumer space...including Crucial, Intel and OCZ, where CEO Ryan Petersen says...
"It is changing and in fact OCZ has recently released a two terabyte SSD. I'm predicting that by 2012, we'll see pricing parity between SSDs and hard drives."
OCZ's fast Vertex 2 Series 120 gigabyte SSD sells for about 350 dollars. You can find us with archives and more at BootCamp.com. I'm Fred Fishkin.
