Sony and TomTom Partner for In-Dash Navigation

Techstination feature for Thursday, October 14, 2010

In car navigation. The latest from Sony and TomTom. I'm Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear. For the first time, Sony has entered the business of creating an in-car navigation system designed as an alternative to those that are built in by car makers. And it is doing it in partnership with TomTom. There are two models...one with a 7 inch touch screen, the other with a 6.1 inch screen. Mike Kahn, the director of Sony's mobile music business, says the partnership with TomTom brings some advantages...TeleAtlas maps and map share technology...

"Every five seconds they take a brief snapshot of the actual speed consumers are moving through that road, anonymously. And when that consumer connects their navigation device up to their PC that's Internet connected, it shares that information up to the TomTom database."

So even without the addition of a live traffic service, the navigation system is aware of recent traffic conditions due to construction and the like. The new systems, which also have rich entertainment capability, arrive next month starting at a thousand dollars. You can find us at BootCamp.com. I'm Fred Fishkin.
