Deals that are too good to be true. And they are. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bootcamp, a report on computers and technology. If you're buying a PC these days, the advertised prices seem amazing, until you read the fine print. Then you find out the actual price of the computer is three or four hundred dollars more unless you sign up for three or four years with a particular Internet service. Then there are the so called free PCs. What you are doing is selling your privacy to marketers in exchange for a sub-standard computer. If you so much as try to get rid of the ads from your screen, you'll owe plenty. Somewhere in the middle of all of this is a company called PeoplePC, which is offering, if you don't need the fastest computer around, what seems to be a pretty good deal. PeoplePC's Mark Barden...
"Basically, what PeoplePC is, is a way for most Americans on a monthly payment of 24.95 to get a great brand name computer, unlimited Internet access, 24/7 technical support and even in-home service if something goes wrong that we can't fix over the phone. And also, finally, access to an online buying community where we can get deals and discounts on just about anything."
The deal is for three years. A typical set up is a 333 MHz Toshiba Celeron with a 15 inch monitor. It's yours to keep and you can get a new machine when the three years are up. It's a package worth exploring at peoplepc.com.
