Helping to track those Great Migrations. I'm Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear. National Geographic's Great Migrations series tells the amazing stories of a wide variety of migratory animals on our planet. And some of the technology used to tell the stories is pretty amazing too. Dr. Rory Wilson, a lead scientific consultant for the series, developed what he calls a Daily Diary tagging device...
"It's a very, very sophisticated tag. And with this tag we can determine where the animals are in 3D space. We can determine what their behavior is. We can pick up every single footstep or fin beat or whatever. And we can also figure out the energy they're expending to do the activities that they're engaged in. And we can also get a pretty good measure of what's going on in the environment around them because of the environmental sensors."
The production of the Great Migrations series took three years. The results are astounding to watch. You can find us with archives, interviews and more at BootCamp.com. I'm Fred Fishkin.
