One sure thing the New Year will bring... faster computers. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bootcamp, a report on computers and technology. Whether you are talking about Apple, Intel or AMD...the one thing you can bet on in the year ahead is that processors will be faster than ever before. Intel and AMD will soon have 800 MHz processors on the market, just months after 600 MHz computers made their debut. No, it doesn't mean that still new computer you bought is obsolete. But it illustrates again just how fast technology changes. AMD's Gary Bixler says even the 800 MHz models won't be at the top of the heap for long...
"It wasn't very long ago when we were struggling, trying to hit the last big milestone, which was 100 MHz. And now we're ten times that. And we will deliver a 1 GHz or 1000 MHz processor in the second half of next year. So that's just barely six months or a little more away."
Before you know it, those processors will be mainstream and in the years ahead...
"You're going to be seeing some very exciting things including speeds well in excess of 1000 MHz or 1 GHz, so just that in itself is exciting. But you're also going to see things like multiple processors in a single package."
You find them in high end servers today. Tomorrow... in our homes.
