A notebook computer designed for kids. Toshiba's Kids PC

Techstination feature for Wednesday, December 22, 2010

A notebook computer designed for kids.   I’m Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear.     Toshiba and Best Buy have teamed up this holiday season to create and sell a Kids PC… a notebook computer aimed at seven to twelve year olds.  So how did they build a notebook designed to survive in a kid’s world?   Toshiba product marketing manager Mark Lackey…

We made the keyboard a wipeable keyboard, knowing that kids are little bit… not tougher on PCs… but peanut butter and jelly… sometimes sticky fingers can be a nuisance to keyboards.  So we added a wipeable keyboard to it.  As well as we kind of kidderized the PC itself.”

The hard drive has a sensor to protect data in case of a fall.   There’s software for kids built in…and for parental peace of mind….a full year subscription to NetNanny.   The price…about five hundred dollars.   You can find us at BootCamp.com.   I’m Fred Fishkin.
