Tax prep software: go paid or free?

Techstination feature for Friday, February 18, 2011

When it comes to doing your taxes, should you pay for software or use a freebie?    I’m Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp,  a report on gadgets and gear.    Millions of people use their computers  to do their taxes and file online….and there are some great software packages that make it simple.   The most popular is Intuit’s TurboTax, where VP and CPA Bob Meighan says the company’s free version is good enough for many….

Something like close to 90 million taxpayers can actually use our free product.   The free product is good for those people who have relatively simple returns.  So in other words, they’re filing a 1040A or 1040EZ return.  Generally their income is going to be less than about 58 thousand dollars.  They don’t itemize.   But that’s a wide range of people and other than the fact that it is free, this is a great way for anybody to try the product. ”

It does take at least some of the stress out of filing.   You can find more info and the software at TurboTax.com.   You can find us at BootCamp.com.   I’m Fred Fishkin.
