Techstination feature for Thursday, February 24, 2011

Have the kids arrived home from school?   Your smartphone can tell you.   I’m Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear.     Chip company Qualcomm has developed an app for Android phones and iPhones, that can help families keep track of who is where and what’s what.   Neer  allows you to share limited specific locations with a circle of family members or friends.  Business development director Ian Heidt…

It discloses just the places that you choose to share.  This can be as few or as many places as you care to have.  I have my home, my work, my kids’ day cares.   That way, when I’m dropping one kid off, I can leave my phone completely in my pocket, I don’t have to take it out,  and then my wife, if she’s looking for me, she knows okay, Ian’s dropping the kids off at daycare, I’m not going to call him right now, he’s got a two year old under his arm.”  And then, it might also tell her you’ve arrive at work, or when you’re leaving work?   “Correct.  It’s just an arrived or left event at the places that you’ve chosen.

The  Neer app, spelled N E E R, is free.   You can find us at BootCamp.com.  I’m Fred Fishkin.
