Do you text and email right before bed? I’m Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear. The National Sleep Foundation is out with its latest survey on Sleep in America. And it turns out, says vice chairman Dr. Russell Rosenberg, that taking a laptop or smartphone to bed…surprise, surprise… isn’t such a good idea….
“First of all, those that are using the computer with a lighted screen before bedtime, light actually has an effect on our brain relating to a hormone called melatonin which many people have heard about as being related to sleep. That’s sort of the physiologic aspect of this. The second thing is that anything that wakes you up in the middle of the night, even if you get back to sleep fairly quickly, can end up causing you to feel un-refreshed.”
A lot of us are guilty. The foundation says even having the TV on just before going to bed can keep you from getting all the sleep you need. You can find us, maybe dozing a bit, at BootCamp.com. I’m Fred Fishkin.
