An electric bike unlike any other. YikeBike.

Techstination feature for Thursday, December 29, 2011

An electric bike unlike any other.   I’m Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear   It is funny looking.  Even funnier looking when you ride it.  You sit in front of the handle bars.   But the YikeBike is one of the coolest gadgets we’ve seen this year.   It’s an all electric form of transportation from New Zealand that ingeniously folds up to a size that can easily be carried into your home, your office or into a store.   CEO and co-founder Grant Ryan says it was inspired by the Segway…

“I thought the Segway was a fantastic piece of engineering, but I thought that if you could make it dramatically smaller and lighter and easier to carry it would be that much more useful.   So that was really our focus.”

The YikeBike’s range with a standard battery is about six miles, but it recharges in less than two hours.  You can have a look at YikeBike.com.   The big draw back right now is the price, with the least expensive model selling for two thousand dollars.   Ryan says his hope is that can come down.   You can find us at BootCamp.com.   I’m Fred Fishkin.
