Can a phone in the car improve driver safety?   I’m Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear.    Using a cell phone to text while driving is dangerous and talking on one can be dangerous too according to the National Transportation Safety Board, even if you using a hands free device.  But a new app called iOnRoad,  out now for Android smartphones, is designed to improve driver safety.    It’s from a company called Picitup, where CEO Alon Atsmon says the app uses the phone’s camera and GPS capability to see where you are in relation to the car in front of you…

“If the time gap is too short, it means you are tailgating and then you’ll get a warning.  If you are departing from your lane it means that you either fell asleep or didn’t put your eyes on the road and that’s another case where we would give a warning. ”

The app is iOnRoad and for the moment, at least, it is free in the Android Market.  You can find us at BootCamp.com.   I’m Fred Fishkin.
