Saving money with Nest high tech thermostat

Techstination feature for Tuesday, July 10, 2012

During a long hot summer, a high tech thermostat can save you money.   I’m Fred Fishkin with Technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear.   If you think a thermostat is a thermostat is a thermostat,  we’ve got some news.   There are models out there that use wireless technology to let you adjust the temperature with your smartphone.   And then there is the Nest.   It is designed like a traditional round thermostat …but the similarity ends there.   It has sensors that tell it when no one is home, so it can adjust the temperature to save money.  And, says Co-founder and former Apple engineer Matt Rogers it includes technology called Air Wave…

“Basically what this feature does is it turns the compressor off early and still uses kind of that coldness in the compressor to cool the air that cools your home.  It saves a ton of energy.   We found up to 30 percent of energy savings just based on this one feature.”

The 250 dollar price may seem high for a thermostat, but the cost can be made up in savings fairly quickly.   You can find us at BootCamp.com.  I’m Fred Fishkin.
