Pentium III on The Way

Techstination feature for Thursday, January 14, 1999

Intel counts to three. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bootcamp, a report on computers and technology. That brand new Pentium II computer you just took out of the box will start to sound outdated in a couple of months. It will work just fine, mind you, it will just sound old. Intel has announced that Pentium III processors will debut in March. Intel's Greg Welch says the Pentium III will feature lots of enhancements. The first models will run at 450 and 500 megahertz. But Welch says those numbers can be misleading...

"It's actually a very high performing processor above and beyond that megahertz number because of the new design and what we call micro-architecture, which makes it a much more efficient processor."

It is already confusing enough for consumers trying to choose between Intel Celeron, Pentium IIs...and the processors from AMD and Cyrix. What will be the difference say between a 450 megahertz Pentium II and a Pentium III...

"The more complex the application, the more it uses rich media, the more pronounced the difference in the improvements that you'll get with the Pentium III will be."

Hard core computer game players are often the first to jump on the latest and greatest...

"And people who are engaged in those kinds of activities on personal computers are always hungry for greater performance."

Hold on, it's almost feeding time again.
