Forget the Oscars! The Webby Nominations Are Out

Forget the Oscars! The Webby nominations are out. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bootcamp, a ThirdAge.com report on computers and technology. They're the Oscars of the Internet. The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences... .almost sounds like that Hollywood bunch... is out with the list of nominees for the fourth annual Webby awards. Academy founder and director Tiffany Shlain says the competition is intense. After all, the Web is world wide...

"There's a lot of gems that are very small sites. And we have some nominees from South Africa, Moscow, the UK, Canada, France... and there's a lot of sites that will be surprises to people that they've never been to. And there's a lot of real small sites competing against large corporations and there's the full gamut."

There are five nominees in 27 different categories. But when the winners are announced on May 11th in San Francisco, don't worry about hearing a lot of long-winded, tearful thank yous and such. Acceptance speeches are limited to five words. Not five minutes. Five words!

"It's about time, really. But people stick to it religiously and it's very funny. They make wonderful haikus and it's probably one of the most entertaining parts of the show."

Like the Oscars, this is a bit of a fashion show...

"The range of fashion ranges from boas to Teletubby outfits to tuxes to technology enhanced clothes."

The Academy members vote for the winners but you can cast your ballot for the people's choice awards at Webbyawards.com. You can find us at ThirdAge.com. Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin for CBS News.
