Print Your Own Movie Tickets

Techstination feature for Wednesday, March 22, 2000

Wait in line for movie tickets? Not anymore. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bootcamp, a ThirdAge.com report on computers and technology. I usually laugh when people talk about what a great time saving tool a computer is. More often than not you wind up wondering where the time went when you're on the Web. And some people who play computer games have been known to disappear from the outside world for weeks. But here, my friend, is a new tool on the Web that really can save you precious time and aggravation. MovieFone, which is owned by America Online, is letting you not only buy movie tickets in advance, now you can print them at home before you leave for the theatre...

"We take the purchase on the Web, we encrypt it, we send it back to your computer in the form of a ticket with a barcode, and that's then a unique ticket which you come to the movie theatre with... it's scanned by a handheld scanner and verified and then you're in the theatre."

No more waiting in line says MovieFone General Manager Matthew Bromberg. Even if the lines get long for those Oscar winners...

"You print out the ticket, you've got it in your pocket there, there's no waiting in the theatre, you speed through the theatre, there's no waiting for the one member of the party who is always late, everyone will have their own ticket and can just speed right through. We think it's going to be a remarkable convenience for people."

United Artists is the first chain in line to use the technology. Others will follow... and eventually... even... .reserved seats. You can find us on the Web at ThirdAge.com. Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin for CBS News.
