Two billion hard drives and counting: Seagate

Techstination feature for Thursday, March 28, 2013

Two billion hard drives and counting.   I’m Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear.   It was a milestone reached this month by Seagate.   The company shipped it’s two billionth drive.  And while it took 29 years to sell the first billion, the second billion took less than five.  We’re storing just about everything in a digital way it seems and says Seagate VP Scott Horn…

“The capacity points of drives thirty years ago measured in megabytes or even less.  And today our mainstream drives are terabytes of capacity.  In fact, we’re rapidly seeing, in response to both consumer and commercial end user demand, capacity points going higher and higher per drive.”

And the amount of data being stored in the cloud is helping to push that even more.   Seagate is forecasting that trend will continue.   You can find us, with archives, interviews and more at BootCamp.com.  I’m Fred Fishkin.
