Putting email in your pocket. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bootcamp, a report on computers and technology. There's a new generation of relatively inexpensive electronic devices on the market now that let you send and receive email from nearly any kind of telephone. The cheapest one is the JVC HCE100 at 99 dollars. It has an address book and 128k of storage capacity. JVC's Matt Cooper says you just dial an 800 number, hold the device up to a regular phone, pay phone or analog cell phone...and push a button...(sound)

"The idea is if somebody is on their way to the airport or getting off a plane and changing planes and they need to do something quickly and email is the appropriate way to communicate, somebody, or the user can just go right a pay phone, bank of pay phones in a fairly noisy environment, have the messages already prepared, dial a toll free number and the whole transaction will probably take anywhere from 15 to 30 seconds depending on the length of messages or the size of messages and the number of incoming messages that might be getting downloaded into the system."

The PokcetMail service costs 9.95 a month for unlimited messages. For about 150 dollars, Sharp has a similar device called the TelMail. The differences are, Sharp wisely included a scheduling, calendar program, four times the memory and a cable that lets you back up your data onto a PC. You can find more information at pocketmail.com.
