The latest product from Nest can save your life. I’m Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear. The folks at Nest…who’ve had an Internet connected smart thermostat on the market for a while….are out now with the Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide alarm. And it is different from any other smoke alarm you’ve seen or heard before. The Nest Protect speaks with a human voice, it is connected to the Internet via WiFi allowing it to stay in touch with you even when you aren’t home letting you know when there are problems or when batteries need replacing. That connection also lets you control features like the ability to light up when it detects movement in a dark room. Multiple Nest Protect alarms can communicate with each other…so if there’s smoke downstairs near the kitchen….the alarm in the bedroom will tell you about it. Another cool feature….if the smoke is only from your overdone toast…you can simply wave your hand to stop the alarm. The Nest Protect sells for a hundred twenty nine dollars and is available in wired or battery only versions. You can find us at BootCamp.com. I’m Fred Fishkin.
