Sometimes even more. And linking them all together has been complicated and sometimes costly. Now comes a new system that lets you network the computers using the existing telephone wiring in your house, without disrupting the way you use the phones at all. And standards set by the Home Phoneline Networking Alliance mean products sold by different manufacturers will work together. Available starting this month is HomeFree Phoneline from Diamond Multimedia. Diamond's Rocky Scales...

"There's a lot of consumers out there that want to be able to connect those PCs together for a variety of reasons. Sharing one connection to the Internet, sharing peripherals such as printers, sharing files between PCs and also participating in multi-player gaming between those PCs."

And the cost is about fifty dollars per computer. Compaq has already announced models that will have the phoneline networking built in. Compaq's Mark Carpenter is Vice President of the alliance that set the standards...

"I think certainly by the year 2000 and going into 2001, that home networking will just be a very normal thing that consumers do without even knowing they're doing it."
