A home automation hub designed for flexibility

A home automation hub designed for flexibility.   I’m Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear.   If you like to tinker around like I do with home automation,  with connected door locks, light switches, thermostats and such…one of the problems has been the different wireless standards used by manufacturers.   SmartThings is trying to solve that with a hub that can tie different standards together.  CEO Alex Hawkinson…

“Each of those different standards has their own strengths and weaknesses.  So we try to make that invisible for consumers by creating a single hub that talks to all of what we see as the leading standards.  So you can buy devices that would be let’s say a lock that you could control.  As a consumer you’d have a choice in choosing whether you’d have a WiFi connected lock or a Zigbee connected lock or ZWave or so on and you’d still have all the intelligence and some of the same experiences in the SmartThings platform.”

The clever and useful SmartThings Hub sells for about a hundred dollars and there are kits including sensors as well.  You can find us at BootCamp.com.  I’m Fred Fishkin.
