A Link for the Links

Techstination feature for Wednesday, May 3, 2000

High tech tee times. Golf is a fiercely competitive sport. A lot of the competition comes in trying to get a tee time on a weekend morning. Well, at more and more courses around the country you can link to the links on the Web. Tom Halton is VP at a site called TheGolfNetwork.com... .where you can book tee times at over 375 courses around the country...

"Clearly The Golf Network provides a convenience to the golfer as well as the golf course. From the golfer's standpoint, being able to reach us via the Internet or one of our two call centers 24 hours, seven days a week, gives them the convenience of being able to look on the site or call the call center and get the desired tee time that they're looking to receive."

If the course you are looking to play at is booked, just browse over to the next one. You can check policies and how much green it will take you to get on the greens. The basic service is free, but for an additional 30 dollars a year... you can enter your scores online...

"You'll be able to enter your scores right onto our system. Load a course if you need to load a course that's not on our system and be able to keep track of your handicap."

The one drawback, in many parts of the country there aren't enough golf courses participating. TheGolfNetwork is adding about 50 new courses a month. There are also links to golf resorts, schools, driving ranges and shops. You can find us on the Web at ThirdAge.com. Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin for CBS News.
