Garmin's Fenix 2: multi-sport, GPS, hiking, connected watch

Techstination feature for Tuesday, May 20, 2014

A watch designed for almost anything in the great outdoors.   I’m Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear.     The new Fenix 2 watch from Garmin is at its heart…a great fitness watch with modes for running, swimming and even skiing.   You’ll probably want to use it with a heart rate sensor.   But it can do much more.   For hikers, the GPS built in can help you re-trace your steps to find the trail head or your campsite.  There is also a built in altimeter and compass.    Beyond that, Garmin’s Maddie Estrada says…

“If you have an iPhone 4S or later, Android is coming later this year, you can pair it via Bluetooth with the device, and receive call, text and email notifications.  Which is great for someone who is out hiking or skiing or snowboarding when they want their cell phone packed safely away.”

As you might expect, the Fenix 2 is a bit bulky….as is the price…at about four hundred dollars.  You can find us at BootCamp.com.   I’m Fred Fishkin.
