Computer Help With... (Gulp)....Math

Techstination feature for Tuesday, May 9, 2000

It's enough to make grown men tremble. But there's help available from your computer... .with math! I'm Fred Fishkin with Bootcamp, a ThirdAge.com report on computers and technology. What you had to memorize back in high school and those early years of college has long been forgotten. But what happens when... heaven forbid... you need some of those old math skills? For me, the moment of truth came when my daughter asked for help with homework in high school. History? Glad to help. English? No problem. Math? Run for cover. Well a company called Mathsoft feels your pain. It's latest program, StudyWorks Math Success is designed for people of all ages. Mathsoft VP Chris Randles...

"We believe it's of use for everyone from high school right through to adult and the reason for that is it covers a broad range of subjects. It has some quick review capabilities in it and really it's a quick muscle builder for people who want to get better at math. Maybe refresh their memory on basic mathematics or possibly catch up with the crowd."

What crowd is that?

"Well that's a good point. I mean we talk to many parents who like to brush up on their own math skills so they can help their kids."

Go ahead, make me feel guilty. However you feel about math, it's nice to know that if you need to brush up on everything from Algebra up to (gulp) calculus, Mathsoft can help, for under thirty dollars. You can find us on the Web at ThirdAge.com. Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin for CBS News.
