Nokia maps out path to autonomous drivin

Techstination feature for Wednesday, November 19, 2014

How soon will you be in a car that can drive itself?    I’m Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear.   Automakers and technology companies are racing to make cars that can drive themselves.   One of them is Nokia.   It using its HERE technology and the cloud to create high definition maps that are detailed enough for cars to pinpoint precisely where they are.    And Senior VP of Connected Driving Ogi Redzic says technology may not be as much of an obstacle as governments and consumer sentiment….

“Technology is a big piece obviously, but it’s not the most important piece at this point.  I think technology is on the right track, so it will get us there in time.  But legislation and frankly some ethical issues I think still need to be discussed and debated but legislation I believe is something that really needs to be addressed in the next few years.”

Redzic believes it may happen first in Germany.    When?  He says fully autonomous vehicles, the kind you can fall asleep in, should be ready in about ten years.   You can navigate to us at BootCamp.com.   I’m Fred Fishkin.
