The Digital Storage Battle... Iomega's Clik!

Techstination feature for Thursday, May 25, 2000

A thin metallic disc ... .for your computer, maybe your phone and your camera. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bootcamp, a ThirdAge.com report on computers and technology. I've been telling you about all the competition out there when it comes to digital storage. It can be pretty confusing for people like you and me because you want to be able to store digital information on something that will work on your home PC, the office computer and you want to be able to share the data with friends or relatives. That means you need some kind of standard. Sony is pushing its Memory Stick. Stick it... is the questionable slogan. Most digital cameras use either CompactFlash or SmartMedia to store pictures. Iomega, the company that created the wildly popular Zip disks years ago, is pushing its own technology called Clik!... .

"For people who are familiar with our other products, it's like a miniaturized version of a Zip drive."

Product manager David Tietjen. With adaptors, the 40 megabyte little disks can be used in laptops and desktops... PCs or Macs. And Iomega is working with manufacturers to create all kinds of devices that will use Clik! ... .

"I mean look at digital imaging, look at digital audio MP3 players. To take this type of form factor and you can start introducing it into all of these other digital electronic devices is really very exciting."

Agfa, for instance, sells a digital camera with a built in Clik! drive. My only disappoint with that is the drain on batteries. But Clik disks are less expensive. A standard? I'm still looking... .and hoping. You can find more information where our digital files are stored... .at ThirdAge.com. Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin for CBS News.
