Techstination feature for Tuesday, May 30, 2000

The Web has information on just about every kind of hobby you can imagine... and some you probably can't. But it isn't always that easy to find. Type in www.hobbies.com and you wind up at the eToys site. Type in just plain www.hobby.com and there's a bathing suit beauty. Some might consider that a hobby. Actually, she's holding a trophy for a radio controlled car racing track. A site that offers a little more in the way of selection is ehobbies.com...

"Right now we have a total of nine different hobbies on the site. Those hobbies are astronomy, birding, comics and action figures, radio controlled cars, boats, planes and helicopters, plastic models, collectible die-cast models, model rocketry and all the tools and supplies that go around those categories."

eHobbies CEO Brad Sobel. If you didn't notice, the hobbies on the site so far are male oriented, even though plenty of women have interests in birding and astronomy. And the choices are pretty limited, although there are plans to triple the number of hobbies available... .

"In the future, what you'll see is month to month the launching of many additional categories. Each containing the shopping part, the community and the content pieces."

The most popular so far... astronomy and those radio controlled cars. You'll also find lots of info for hobbyists at our home on the Web, ThirdAge.com. Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin for CBS News.
