New kind of memory for PCs and more

A new kind of memory for computers and other devices.   I’m Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear.    The big chip makers Intel and Micron have announced the first new kind of memory in more than 25 years.    It’s called 3D XPoint…and it should begin to arrive in products you’ll see on the market next year.   What’s different?   Rob Crooke is Senior VP and General Manager of the Non Volatile Memory Solutions Group at Intel…

“It’s an innovative transistor-less cross point memory that can be stacked in 3 dimensions.  So it’s nearly as fast as conventional memory, yet it’s ten times the density.  And it’s nearly as dense as main flash or SSD memory technology, yet it’s a thousand times faster and up to a thousand times more endurance.”

What it means for us is that the waits that we’re used to experiencing with computers,  smartphones and such….will pretty much be eliminated with 3D XPoint technology.   Stay tuned.   You can find us at BootCamp.com.   I’m Fred Fishkin.
