Epson's EcoTank printers give consumers new printing choice

Techstination feature for Thursday, August 27, 2015

New printers from Epson designed to change the game.   I’m Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear.   For years, the ink jet printer business has used the razor/razor blade business model.    They money has been made on expensive ink cartridges.    But now Epson has announced new EcoTank printers that the company says will be able to print for up to two years without needing a refill…and even those refills will cost less than 60 dollars.   What’s the catch?   Sr. Product Manager Rodrigo Catalan…says the starting price of the printers is about four hundred dollars…

“EcoTank is like an electric shaver.  You pay for it up front but you don’t have to worry about going and buying supplies afterward.  So it’s essentially giving users a choice.  We think a lot of users will still like the cartridge solution because their print volume is probably a good fit for that.   But there’s probably a good set of customers out there who we think will be really excited about EcoTank.”

Time will tell.   There’s more info at Epson.com.   You can find us at BootCamp.com.   I’m Fred Fishkin.
