Turning Kids Loose on the Family PC

Techstination feature for Friday, July 14, 2000

Here it is the middle of summer, the kids are inside on a rainy day. Should you just turn on the computer and let the kids have fun? Sure, if you can sit there with them... .but if you can't... who knows what kinds of trouble they can get into. One solution... .for two to twelve year olds, is a free service called Your Own World from passportnewmedia. Co-founder and president Brian Pass...

"Your Own World is a stand alone software product that lets families expose their kids to Internet content in an off-line environment. We bring them the best of the Web. Our content partners are Time Magazine for Kids, Sports Illustrated, Muppets, Reader Rabbit, Kid Pix and the best stuff of the Web. We actually use the Internet to update that content on a regular basis so the kids always have something new to experience and the best thing of all is we do this absolutely free."

Keep in mind, though, there are ads included with the service... just as there are with those Saturday morning cartoons. Your Own World can be tailored to specific age groups... and parents can password protect the exit button...

"Which is great with young children because they can quit out of a CD ROM, my kids do all the time and start playing around with my files and launch the Internet accidentally."

Again, the software is free at Yourownworld.com. You can find us at Bootcamp.com. Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin for CBS News.
