Are You Ready for the 3D Web?

Techstination feature for Monday, July 31, 2000

Put those funny cardboard glasses away. You won't need them for this kind of 3D. Macromedia and Intel are teaming up to bring new technology to your browser... .

"We're going to take what, right now, is sort of a trickle of 3D on the Web and turn that into a veritable flood."

Macromedia's Miriam Geller. The new technology will become part of Shockwave. Chances are pretty good you are among the more than 130 million or so people using the Shockwave player already on your PC or Mac. So what will the new 3D capability mean...

"We're talking about ecommerce, we're talking about things like entertainment. Think about when you go online to Ticketmaster and you want to get a seat. And when you try to figure out where you're sitting, you might look at a seating chart. Instead of just looking at a seating chart, imagine being able to view what the stage would look like from your seat from a three dimensional viewpoint."

Intel has developed the new technology, but it is designed to work on Macs as well. Intel's Roger Chandler...

"Everyone's going to be able to see great 3D content through the Web and it's just going to really push the industry forward in new directions and enable new markets."

There have been 3D viewers on the Web before, the plan this time is to make the technology available to everyone. When? We're told the near future. You can find us on the Web at Bootcamp.com. Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin for CBS News.
