Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear. I’m Fred Fishkin. Western Digital’s acquisition of flash memory maker San Disk is paying off for consumers. The company is coming out with SSD editions of its well known My Passport line of external drives. They’re the company’s first portable solid state drives. And they go up to one terabyte. The advantages? Product Manager Luke Ottrey…
“Well we still sell traditional My Passport drives, right? The advantage obviously is that it is more compact, faster and more robust, right? More durable. This has got a six and a half foot drop test and fifteen hundred Gs of force, unlike hard drives that won’t necessarily survive such a drop. That said, you know you’re getting this at a premium price relative to an external disc.”
The one terabyte version, for instance, is priced at about four hundred dollars. That’s more than three hundred above a traditional hard drive price.
