Desktop Clutter? Try PaperPort Deluxe

Techstination feature for Friday, September 1, 2000

Remember the promise of the paperless office? I'm Fred Fishkin with Bloomberg Bootcamp. Isn't that what all of this digital equipment is supposed to do? Get rid of those piles of papers all over your desk? If your desk is like mine, it's pretty obvious it hasn't worked out that way. I don't know why, but we seem to hit the print button way to often. It's almost as if a document isn't real until it's on a piece of paper. Well, there are programs that can at least help you organize the clutter. The best I've found is PaperPort from ScanSoft...

"ScanSoft isn't in the business to try to eliminate paper. What we're trying to do is eliminate the redundancy of paper. Making copies, making too many copies. The idea that you have a document or publish the document on paper or have a print of a photograph, I mean that's a good thing. What we're trying to do is allow people to organize them in more efficient ways."

ScanSoft's John Hoye. PaperPort Deluxe 7.0, the latest version, turns your PC equipped with a scanner into a virtual file cabinet. It lets you drag and drop documents to printers, email or fax and keep them stored in digital folders. It stores Web pages too...

"It allows you to combine and bring your paper life together with your digital life."

There are versions for PCs and Macs and the street price... about 59 dollars. For more info, the address is ScanSoft.com. Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin, Bloomberg News.
