New MSN Explorer From Microsoft

Techstination feature for Wednesday, September 6, 2000

Microsoft tries to lock in more eyes online. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bloomberg Bootcamp. Microsoft already claims to have 201 million unique visitors to its MSN portal on the Web. This week it unleashes a new weapon in its battle with AOL for supremacy... .MSN Explorer. Lead product manager Deanna Sanford...

"This is different in that it's a whole new interface. So across the top you have buttons to the key services that people use on the Web... email, instant messaging, shopping, etcetera. And down the left, we call it my sidebar. And that gives you very personalized information that's totally customizable."

The key is... that the new MSN Explorer will keep its tools... like chat and instant messaging in front of you... wherever you browse on the Web... .and no matter which Internet service provider you log on with...

"MSN Explorer is a free download. It doesn't matter which ISP you use. You can go and download it and run it on your machine."

Even if your ISP is, say, AOL. The site is preview.msn.com. The download is a manageable four megabytes... that simply updates Internet Explorer 5.0 or 5.5. It's a beta version... with the finished product due out this fall. You can write to us... at letters@bootcamp.com. Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin, Bloomberg News.
