Techstination feature for Tuesday, October 3, 2000

Ten thousand new words and seventy thousand sound files to help with pronunciations. The interactive versions of fourth edition of the American Heritage dictionary. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bloomberg Bootcamp. It's in print, on CD ROM and on the Web. The latest edition of the American Heritage dictionary. The print version isn't going away any time soon... but there are some real advantages to a digital dictionary. For instance... can your print dictionary pronounce words you look up like... .(sound)? And when it comes to searching for words... it's hard to beat the ease and speed of digital. About all of those new words... executive editor Joe Pickett says keeping up isn't easy...

"The vocabulary of English is really exploding. Just because of these technological changes... technological advancement is so rapid that the language is always coming up with changes to keep apace of it. But there are also social developments if you think of things like shopaholic. And people are always coining new ways of saying the same thing. A slang term like twenty four seven, for example, which is used all over the place and means basically constantly, all the time... that's a kind of interesting development. You have to wonder, too, why people do this. And it's just for the joy of creating new words, I think.
