Bluetooth is on the Way

Techstination feature for Friday, October 6, 2000

Get ready for Bluetooth. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bloomberg Bootcamp. It's not a condition that requires dental attention. It's a new wireless technology that will let all kinds of electronic devices communicate with each other. I'll have a lot more to tell you about it in the weeks to come. But Bluetooth enabled products will be out this year. Motorola, for instance, is introducing the Timeport 270... .a wireless phone... that can connect to a Bluetooth enabled notebook computer or even PDA. Motorola's Mark Francisco...

"It's like a handheld modem and they don't even need to be in proximity of each other. The handset can be up to 30 feet away from the personal computer. It could be in your purse, your backpack, your bag... there's not the constraints of being connected up as if you would be with wires or connected to the wall as you would be in your home via modem."

Bluetooth will be used to connect computers to each other, to printers, digital cameras, handhelds, you name it. Toshiba has hit the market with Bluetooth cards for notebooks. What's to keep my computer from inadvertently connecting with yours? Toshiba's Steven Andler ...

"Everyone has a unique ID and so it will recognize that and there are protocols set up for communicating between devices. There's also no eavesdropping capable because there's encryption and there's also a technique of jumping frequencies that it transmits on very rapidly so eavesdropping is almost impossible."

The predictions are within a year, maybe two, Bluetooth will be everywhere. Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin, Bloomberg News.
