A Tour of the Microsoft Home

Techstination feature for Wednesday, November 22, 2000

A tour of the Microsoft Home. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bloomberg Bootcamp. It's an eight thousand square foot loft in New York's Tribeca... that Microsoft has converted into a high tech heaven. Our tour guide... is Microsoft's director of consumer strategy... Steve Guggenheimer...

"This is our kitchen. And people may not think about technology in the kitchen but it turns out that a kitchen is a very busy area. Whether it's keeping track of the calendar, looking up recipes, going grocery shopping. This is an MSN Companion, a new breed of Internet appliances. We have our grandmother in here who has been chatting away with her friends. She's looking up groceries." "I was just looking up some recipes while I was sitting here." "Let's go around into our dining room. So here we have an uncle who comes to visit us and he brings his own PC from home. And it turns out because we've set up a wireless network, he can come and work. This is our teenager's bedroom. So from this device, it creates your own playlist, listens to music, makes phone calls, plays games and last but not least, she can also watch television." And a typical teenager might do all at the same time. "This is our younger kid's room versus the teenager. So one of the great things with younger children especially is the fact that computers really help with learning. The Magic School Bus is a series we've been working on for a long time, very much around interactive education. Kids are playing but at the same time they're learning." And here's the living room. "I'm not sure if you're familiar with Ultimate TV. This is now a DirecTV-Microsoft joint product. It has all the personal television capability, plus the Internet, plus interactive TV."

You can take a virtual tour of the loft online... at Microsoft.com/home. Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin, Bloomberg Radio.
