The Net At Sea and in the Air

Techstination feature for Friday, November 24, 2000

You may never get away from it all again. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bloomberg Bootcamp. Wherever you go these days... your email and an Internet connection to your office is just a mouse click away. I boarded a cruise ship the other day... .the spanking new Millennium from Celebrity Cruises. And among the features is an Internet Café. 18 workstations equipped with wood trimmed flat screens and Web cams for sending video email back to family members or friends. In the middle of the ocean, you can access the Net through a satellite connection that gives you the equivalent of 56k dial up access from home. Selected suites offer the same kind of connection in your room. And if your method of travel is in the air, Boeing has announced new technology that will let passengers surf the Web at speeds that fly... .

"This essentially gives us full broadband connectivity just as we have at the office when we're flying between work locations."

Scott Carson heads the new Boeing Connexions service which could be available by the end of next year. Carson says Boeing has not yet decided which airline or airlines will get the service first...

"We absolutely believe that there will be strong customer preference for the airline that launches so we expect there to be aggressive competition for who goes first."

Even existing aircraft can be outfitted with the technology that includes an antenna that wraps around the fuselage and an onboard server. The price for passengers? About thirty cents a minute. Bootcamp. I'm Fred Fishkin, Bloomberg Radio.
