Spielberg, Lego...MovieMaker

Techstination feature for Tuesday, November 28, 2000

Time to start thinking about high tech toys for the kids. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bloomberg Bootcamp. Those folks at Lego have done it again. Taken a low tech toy... and turned it into cutting edge entertainment. The latest is the Lego and Steven Spielberg MovieMaker set... designed for children eight and up. It's a wild idea that combines a Lego PC camera... with cardboard movie set backdrops... and some special Lego creatures. Master builder Sarah Chasse...

"The set comes with over 400 unique elements and it also comes with a PC movie camera and editing software so they can use the elements they have in the set to be their actors and their props, to record their movie with the camera and put it right onto their hard drive." You can really make a movie that way? "You really can and it's fascinating what kids can use with their stories to make it interesting and the creativity that they have."

There's even a bearded Lego director with a megaphone that resembles Steven Spielberg. The software lets you create stop action movies with stills... or record video...

"They can add their own music. They can import music from a CD. They can also then add the really cool sound effects which I think is my favorite part because there's over forty different sound effects that they can put into their movie."

(sound) Create your own Lego version of Jurassic Park. The price for the MovieMaker set... about 180 dollars. You can find more information at Lego.com. Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin, Bloomberg Radio.
