Photographing the comet Neowise and more: Bob Vanderbei

Techstination feature for Wednesday, July 22, 2020

Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.   I’m Fred Fishkin.     The comet Neowise has been putting on a show in the night skies this month….and it is easy to come away with some fun telescope necessary.    Princeton University Professor and astrophotographer Bob Vanderbei…says what you need is a camera and a tripod…

“The tripod has to be nice and sturdy and stable.    And then you take a ten second exposure…and I took several.   I took more than a hundred I think over the course of twenty minutes.   And then figure out which one’s the best.  That’s one of the tricks of the trade.”

You can check out a video version of our interview …complete with some of Bob’s spectacular images….on our Web site.  And head to for more.     Bob by the way, is co author of the National Geographic book Sizing Up the Universe.
