The Fashion Industry Goes High Tech

Techstination feature for Thursday, January 4, 2001

The fashion industry goes high tech. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bloomberg Bootcamp. Technology is beautiful. So says a French based company called Lectra Systems... .which has created technology to let fashion designers... .create, manufacture and sell ... over the Internet. Lectra CEO Daniel Harari... says in the past it would take designers six to twelve months to create and bring new fashions to market... .

"And now they can do it in one to three weeks."

Fabrics for clothing and furniture can be designed on computer screens... and then created anywhere in the world. And Harari says it gives consumers choices they've never had before...

"Today you can go and design your home interior, choose the fabric, even design your own fabric on the screen that can be digitally printed just for you and change the colors and make sure color of the curtains goes well with the color of the sofa."

Harari estimates the design your own approach adds ten to fifteen percent to the price. But for the fashion conscious... the new technology could break the bank... .

"A few years ago, all the high fashion companies were having one to two collections a year. Now it came to eight and in some cases, it's permanent. We have customers like Zahar in Europe that change every two weeks all their clothes in their shops worldwide."

Lectra has ten thousand customers for its technology around the world ... from Christian Dior... .to Walmart. Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin, Bloomberg Radio.
