Quite a year for self driving vehicles

Techstination feature for Friday, December 25, 2020

Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.   I’m Fred Fishkin.        It has been quite year, despite the pandemic,  for progress in the world of self driving vehicles.   Perhaps the biggest  development came from Waymo…the Google Alphabet owned self driving company.   This fall, it began offering rides to customers in Arizona…that were completely driverless…without a safety driver on board.   Dan Smith, Waymo’s senior regulatory counsel…spoke to the Smart Driving Cars podcast…and he said the decision was carefully weighed..

“We understand that any residual risk is at a reasonable level.  We have used all those methodologies to come to the point where we have great confidence in our automated driving system to be able to handle that driving task, within its operational design domain and to do so safely.”
