Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear. I’m Fred Fishkin. How tough is it to compete against Apple and Samsung in the mobile phone business? Well…one big competitor, LG, announced this month that it is calling it quits…exiting the phone business by the end of July. The company says the move will allow it to better focus on high growth areas…like components for electric vehicles….robotics…artificial intelligence and smart homes. It wasn’t all that long ago when LG was a leading innovator in mobile phones coming up with curved screens….wide angle cameras…and last year a dual screen 5G smartphone called the Wing. One screen could rotate up to 90 degrees. They took lots of chances…instead of simply churning out copycat phones….and they’ll be missed in this space. For consumers…less competition is usually not a good thing.
