Recording Video...On CDs

Techstination feature for Tuesday, January 30, 2001

Recording video on a CD. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bloomberg Bootcamp. It's almost time to say goodbye to videotape. One of the new technologies coming to market this year... video CD recorders. Konka, the largest television manufacturer in China, now marketing in the U.S. is coming out with a 27 inch TV with a build in DVD player and what they call a VDR... a video disc recorder. Konka VP John Newman says users can record onto standard CDR or CDRW discs... but..shouldn't be confused with DVD recordables...

"The difference is that this will transfer information from a DVD disc to a blank disc but it will be a CDR picture type. The quality will not be as good, I don't know how many people can recognize that picture quality as a DVD quality. Next generation will be DVD."

But you can make digital copies of DVDs or record off air the way you record onto videotape...

"So you can use this in place of the VCR, it just doesn't have the length of record time that a VCR tape has at the current moment." You're limited to about what? "Oh, two hours on a low recording, forty five minutes on the higher type picture quality recording"

And keep in mind, you can purchase blank CDR discs for about a dollar these days. The new technology should be on the market by this summer. Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin, Bloomberg Radio.
