“We’re going to be studying how galaxies evolved over cosmic time since the first formed.  And one of the big science goals for Webb is to find that first generation of galaxies that formed after the big bang. The light we’re seeing arriving now has been travelling through space from almost the whole history of the universe. ”

And the Webb telescope will also be looking for clues about where else in the universe there may be life.
