A Digital Angel Could Save Your Life

Techstination feature for Tuesday, February 27, 2001

A Digital Angel could one day save your life. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bloomberg Bootcamp. Picture a heart patient walking down the street suddenly experiencing chest pains. Now imagine that person's watch automatically notifying a doctor... transmitting the pulse rate, temperature and location. A company called Digital Angel... a subsidiary of Applied Digital Solutions... expects to have the device available by the end of this year... .

"We really believe Digital Angel is a technology that will affect lifestyles in a very major way."

ADS President and COO Mercedes Walton. Digital Angel Chief Scientist Dr. Peter Xhou says the user carries a small cigarette pack size box that contains GPS and cellular technology... in a pocket or on a belt... .that receives a variety of signals from a sensor containing watch... .

"This watch right now measures your temperature and pulse, but in the future you can measure your blood pressure, blood sugar, blood oxygen and so on."

The price is expected to be about a hundred dollars along with a monthly service fee for the wireless connection. The technology could be used to monitor everything from the status of your health... .to keeping tabs on children and pets... tracking parolees... and for the military... the movements and status of soldiers...

"I believe, truly believe, in a few years it will be in our daily life. It will start with people who are old people or sick people, it will become a necessity for them. And for children, for soldiers, for people who are in danger of kidnapping ... they will be very popular."
