Big Growth at Google

Techstination feature for Tuesday, March 20, 2001

When it comes to search engines... there's been big growth at Google. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bloomberg Bootcamp. It arrived a little late at the Internet party... .but has quickly become the search engine of choice for millions. Google. Founded by a couple Stanford computer science Ph.D.s who met in 1995... ..Larry Page... .and Sergey Brin... .who now serves as company president... ..

"We've had really great growth for the past two and a half years that we've been in business. We've had over twenty percent growth per month, so that's added up to a lot. And we now serve over seventy million searches per day, about half of those directly on our sites and the other half go to customers of ours like Yahoo, Netscape and over a hundred others."

Google searches are amazingly fast... and says Brin... it's getting better all the time...

"There's really a lot of technology there. It's the technology investment that we've made. In our company, we have 200 people and half of them are in engineering, a hundred people, and forty those have Ph.D.s. And so we're continually producing better technologies and improving the search. About every month we roll out a new version that's improved significantly over the previous one."

Google.com is still private... but despite the dot com despair, the financial picture is promising...

"We set a goal of being profitable in Q3 of this year and we set that half a year ago and we're still confident we're going to make that."

Highly target advertising and licensing partnerships are bringing in the money. Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin, Bloomberg Radio.
