New Models From Palm

Techstination feature for Wednesday, March 21, 2001

New expandable Palms. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bloomberg Bootcamp. They are sleek and silver and have built in slots for expansion. Palm's new m500 and m505 handheld computers. The 505 is basically the same... but adds a 16 bit color screen. The new models are similar to the Palm V... a little curvier... with the same great rechargeable battery life of three to four weeks...

"The real new feature of this model is the fact that it has a new expansion card slot which accommodates both Secure Digital and Multi-Media Card media."

Palm's Senior Director of Market Development Claudia Romanini. The memory cards are thin, about the size of a postage stamp and can store everything from photos, to games and applications... .

"The expansion card slot provides so many more opportunities for using the handheld than users have been able to use in the past. All of this additional storage... these cards, SD and MMC cards, today can go up to 256 megabytes, and in the future, they will go up to a gigabyte."

What the Palms still lack that some of its competitors have is the ability to play digital music. The cradles for the new models use USB connectors now... .faster than the old serial standard. The monochrome m500 will sell for about 399 dollars... .the color m505 will go for about fifty dollars more. They're due to arrive in stores in late April. Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin, Bloomberg Radio.
