Wireless Phones That Work Around the World

Wireless phones that work around the world. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bloomberg Bootcamp. It's a problem that has plagued globe hopping cell phone users for years and new generations of phones promise to end the frustration. Among those available today is the i2000plus from Motorola and Nextel, where business operations VP John Battaglia says...

"With the i2000plus, Nextel's newest phone, you can make or receive calls, wireless callers can make or receive calls in Australia, Asia... 82 different countries. And the very neat part about it is that when you leave the United States to fly to England for example, you don't need to register when you get to England. You just simply get off the plane, turn on your phone and your Nextel phone is ready to be used to make and receive calls while you're there." Same number. "Same number."

And with little difference in the time it takes to make a call...

"It's very advanced engineering. The Nextel product uses iDEN technology and over in Europe it's a GSM technology so this is a fully digital, dual mode iDEN-GSM phone and it can deliver the calls directly to the customer, the Nextel customer while they're traveling. And it is very quick. The delivery time is just like you were dialing a local call."

The full featured Web-enabled phones sell for as little as 200 dollars with a service plan. Or they can be rented for the length of your trip. You can find more information at Nextel.com. Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin, Bloomberg Radio.
